Dressing in Islam

June 25, 2008

Sisters In Islam (SIS) are again outraged that Kelantan has issued directives on dressing for women. The latest is the Kota Baru Municipal Council's circular asking Muslim women not to use heavy lipstick nor wear high-heels as they could lead to immoral activities. Read more here.

Wait a second, why so serious SIS? Why are you so outraged over something so harmless such as this? What is so surprising about “guidelines on how Muslims should dress”, after all, they are just guidelines. Are you reading it as an “order”?

Besides, did you not read the Quran my dear Ms Norhayati Kaprawi? What is it about the guide that you haven’t already know? For Heaven sake, the directives on dressing for women are from Allah. Even my 10 year-old niece is familiar with it. It is not something new if you have been reading the Quran you know.

I am aware that one of your objectives is to create public awareness on issues of equality, justice, freedom, dignity and democracy in Islam, but you are totally going towards an opposite direction. Are you trying to say that the guideline will somehow make women less equal than man? This is a baseless accusation because men wear neither high-heels nor lipstick and therefore you should be happy that the guideline discourages women from wearing high-heels and lipstick as that would make women one step closer towards becoming like men.

Or are you saying the guideline is not just to women? How can that be when it is a mere guideline and no one is forcing anyone to follow the guideline. Don’t try to make a scene where there isn’t one. Just because Kelantan is more Islamic than other states doesn’t give you the right to criticize its policy which clearly does not cause any harm to you.

Even if you argue that the guideline takes women’s freedom away, I doubt a mere guideline could do that. And you should be thankful because the guideline is trying to protect the Muslim’s dignity. If the guideline encourages women to wear high-heels and lipstick, don’t you think that would be treating women like prostitutes or GRO’s? I wonder how on earth do you define dignity.

I read this from the answer Yahoo! Website and I am pleasantly surprised by what this non-Muslim has to say about Muslims wearing thick make-up and tight clothes. Even a non-Muslim could understand the logic behind discouraging Muslims to wear high-heels and lipstick. Your negative comments on the guideline just show how shallow you are.
